LESSON 8
Higher Thinking Skills through IT – Based Projects

Four Types of IT- Based Projects which can effectively be used in order to engage students in activities of a higher plane of thinking.

A.  Resource- based Projects

In these projects, the teacher steps out of the traditional role of being a content expert and information provider, and instead lets the students find their own facts and information.

B. Simple Creations

Creativity as an outcome should not be equated with ingenuity or high intelligence. It is said to combine three kinds of skills/ abilities:
1.       Analyzing – distinguishing similarities and differences/ seeing the project as a problem to be solved
2.       Synthesizing – making spontaneous connections among ideas, thus generating interesting or new ideas.
3.      Promoting – selling of new ideas to allow the public to test the ideas themselves
To develop Creativity, the following five keys may be recommended:
1.       Define the task.
2.       Brainstorm
3.      Judge the ideas
4.      Act
5.      Adopt flexibility

             C.  Guided Hypermedia Projects

The production of self – made multimedia projects can be approached in two different ways:
1.       As an instructive tool, such as in the production by students of a power-point presentation of a selected topic.
2.       As a communication tool, such as when students do a multimedia presentation to stimulate a television news show.

           D.   Web Based Projects

Students can be made to create and post web pages on a given topic. It should be said, that posting of web pages in the Internet allows the students a wider audience.

DISCUSSION

1.  Should the creativity of students be recognized and approved in more simple projects (for example, producing photos with captions, caricatures on social issues, etc.)? Explain.
·         In my own opinion, the creativity of the students should not be recognized in more simple projects because even they can do more to make their projects more presentable and creative, they will always end up doing simple projects. As if their abilities are being limit in making simple projects.  It should not be recognized in order for the learner to discover more and to enhance their creativity in making projects.

          2.  Should the aspects of expense and time be considered in creativity projects? Explain.
·         Yes, we should consider expense and time in creativity of the projects because if we will not consider time, we have no plan. And if we have no plan, there will no correct outcome of the project such as when rushing it.
And if we will not consider expense, we can’t be able to achieve our needed materials in making projects.

          3.  In group projects, other members ride on the creative talent of one or some members in the group. How can the teacher give proper credit to the more talented/ creative students in a cooperative project?

·         Teacher’s first responsibility is to know his/her learners very well. He/ she always know the individual differences of their learner. And base on this, she can give proper credit to the more talented students.
